Late comeback not enough for Thirds

BALLYKINLAR were the visitors at the weekend against Slane Thirds, bringing a very strong side to Rathfriland High School as they are sitting two points off the top of the league table.

Slane manager, Davy McCullough knew he was up against it from the first whistle against the big burly physical side.

The visitors got off to a flying start and had the ball in the back of the Slane net on five minutes when their big striker broke up the right and fired in from an acute angle to beat Gamble.

A high ball in from the left was caught on the volley by the Kinlar striker and it whizzed past Gamble and into the roof of the net giving him no chance and doubling the visitors lead.

The referee let an offside decision go and Ballykinlar’s striker raced in to hammer the ball home.

Slane dug deep to overcome the ref’s poor decision after decision and Kelly played a one two with Blakely and Kelly raced in to hammer low and hard across the keeper and into the net.

With two minutes to go to the break Kinlar were awarded a free kick and their number 11 stepped up and hammered home to send them into half time 4-1 up.

Manager Davy McCullough made some changes, brining on Dickson and Corbet and it had an immediate impact. Dickson was threaded through by Rowan and he raced past the last defender and rounded the keeper to slot home three minutes into the second half.

Dickson unleashed a power driver from 20 five yards out that sailed through a sea of players and bounced back of the post and Davenport had an effort skim the top of the bar.

Slane upped the tempo pushing the big side who were tiring deep into their own half, Blakely and Anderson were both dangerous making some great darting runs and it almost paid off when Blakely and Anderson combined and the latter hit goal bound but the keeper held well.

Bingham floated in a free kick and Rowan rose the highest but it went wide of the mark.

The visitors were thwarted in any attacks from a strong stubborn Slane defence of Thompson, Shilliday, Kelly and Davenport and they were sitting deep clinging onto their lead.

With five minutes to go Slane narrowed the gap to one goal when Dickson slotted in Anderson and he rounded the keeper to side foot into the net. 4-3

The visitors were desperate in the final five minutes firing in some rash tackles to halt Slane in their tracks as they rained in attack after attack and all the visitors could do is hoof up field in a desperate bid to contain the home side.

They home side were running out of time as the clock ticked down and Dickson almost drew t hem level only for a fine save from the big keeper who put in a solid shift on the day.
