ON Saturday Rathfriland were up against a very strong Warrenpoint team in the Games Development Centre in Newry.

Warrenpoint took an early lead with a great strike from one of their midfielders. This seemed to kick start Rathfriland as they started to play some good passing football. Rathfriland soon equalised with Alex McKee making a surging run down the right wing and hitting an unstoppable shot into the Warrenpoint net.

Near the end of the first period Rathfriland scored their second goal of the game with Shane Haughey winning a free kick in the middle of the park, Steven McElroy then stepped up to hit a thunder bolt of a free kick into the Warrenpoint net.

In the second period Warrenpoint came out the stronger team and put Christopher McConville and Johnny McGivern under a lot of pressure in Rathfriland’s defence.

Jack McGinn was in fantastic form in the Rathfriland goals as he pulled off a number great of saves. At the other end Aaron Baxter and debut boy Aiden McAleenan were causing Warrenpoint’s defence a lot of problems.

Unfortunately Rathfriland were unable to stop Warrenpoint scoring four goals in this period.

In the third period Rathfriland started to dominate the game and put the Warrenpoint defence under a lot of pressure with Shane Haughey, Steven McElroy, Aaron Baxter and Alex McKee taking control of the midfield battle.

Johnny McGivern and Christopher McConville were now starting to show great composure at the back as they put in a number of important tackles. Aiden McAleenan scored a magnificent goal on his debut as he showed a lot of promise for the future.
