Banbridge 4s were beaten disappointingly 4-0 at home to Bangor 3s on Saturday, thanks in part to a goal from former Bann favourite Allen Irwin.
Bann welcomed back the experienced Joe McKnight to their ranks after two weeks out with a hamstring injury and it was the usual
mix of youth and experience that lined. Bangor were a more experienced side including the likes of the experienced forward Gareth Stranaghan in their ranks.
A combination of some superb stops by Bann keeper Adair and some poor finishing saw them get to 20 minutes on level terms. Just when it seemed that Bann were finding their feet though, Bangor took the lead when Stranghan pounced on a Bann mistake and guided the ball past Adair into the empty net.
To their credit, Bann prompted by ex international Robin Madeley and Simon Jess tried to get back on level terms but found the
Bangor keeper a tough nut to crack.
Bangor effectively killed the game 10 minutes after half time when Irwin slammed an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner of
the net from a short corner. Bann kept plugging away and were unfortunate to go three goals down 10 minutes later when a
Bangor forward fortuitously deflected a cross past the hapless Adair. Bann were then denied a deserved goal when Madeley’s
thunderous drive from a narrow angle cannoned off a post.
Stranaghan rapped up the contest 10 minutes from time with a sublime finish from a swift counter attack. Bann have a tough
hill to climb to move into mid-table safety but they are made of stern stuff.
