In-form Dromore sink Bannsiders

Dromore v Lurgan

Dromore v Lurgan

DROMORE made the long journey north on Saturday last to tackle an in form Coleraine side in their Qualifying League 1 fixture.

The Barban Hill men have been in a run of good form and were seeking their fifth win in a row in all competitions.

Recent wet weather put the fixture in doubt but a late call from Coleraine confirmed it was on and the men from Barban Hill set off.

Dromore kicked off on a heavy pitch and it soon became apparent that this match was going to be a battle, Dromore began brightly and Cobb put his pack into the Coleraine 22 with a finely judged kick.

They took a line out through Dalton and drove for the line, Harshaw emerged with the try to put Dromore ahead. Dromore’s defence was superb and they reduced the home side to just one penalty attempt in the first half which dropped short.

Dromore began the second half with a steely determination to not let their lead slip, and soon they added to it with a Steenson penalty to push their lead to 8-0.

The home side continued to try to breach the Dromore defence but they couldn’t find a way past, superb displays by Ryan Wilson, Michael Harshaw and Gareth Fitzpatrick in the pack set the tone for the defence and the backs backed them up at every time if asking with McCandless, Russell and Kinghan making telling hits.

As the clock ticked down Dromore showed their growing maturity by playing the percentages well through young half backs Steenson and Cobb and the game ended without Coleraine threatening the Dromore line again.

Presdent Denis Savage was thrilled with the victory. “I am very happy with the win but the manner in which this young team performed today was pleasing for everyone involved,” he said.

“Young Adam McDonald was immense today and was deservedly named Man of the Match and the whole team are making progress in this tough league.”
