Hugo Downey's Junior Cup team reach Ulster semis
BANBRIDGE are into the Ulster Semi-final of the GUI Junior Cup after a scintillating victory over Ballymena.
The quarterfinal was played last Thursday at the neutral venue of Lisburn Golf Club.
This arrangement suited Hugo Downey’s team, as all his players are familiar with the course layout.
And, better still, one of his key players works on the greens staff at Lisburn. If anyone knew the speed of the greens, Jonathan Burns certainly did.
Rory Madeley was out first against Craig McCartney. Now Rory does not often lose, but he did this time. He was beaten 2 and 1.
Luke Woods was number two and he beat Adrian Gough by 5 and 4. Luke leads the Ulster Under15 Order of Merit and his recent form has been just awesome.
Jonathan Shannon was number three and he played superbly to beat Freddy Dawson
4 and 3. Jonathan is a wonderful iron player and, around a long course like Lisburn, iron play is decisive.
Banbridge were 2-1 ahead and they needed to win one of the remaining two games.
It turned out to be a race between Ross McCandless and Jonathan Burns as to who would get over the winning line first.
Ross was number four and he beat Chris Magee 4 and 3. Ross was hitting his tee shots further than some people go on their holidays and the Ballymena man just had no answer.
And, bringing up the rear, Jonathan Burns was dormie three up against Craig Sloan. He was happy enough to be called in. Jonathan is one of the finest match players in the club and what a player to have in the anchor role!
The Banbridge team will now play the winners of the match between Kilkeel and Cairndhu.
