Gilford win despite slow start

Gilford Crusaders 2

Goodyear 0

GILFORD started the game slowly, making Goodyear look better than they were on the day.

Both teams had early chances on goal only for some good saves from both keepers.

Gilford then stepped up their game with some good passing play on the right with some great runs from Mark Feeney carving through Goodyear’s defence.

It was indeed Mark who opened the scoring for the home side. With a cross from the left he headed the ball past the stranded keeper who was caught under the flight of the ball.

This give Gilford the lift they needed and from then on in the first half Gilford were well on top, only failing to make their chances on goal double their margin.

Goodyear were limited to playing long balls over the top as Gilford had the midfield well dominated and out played the Goodyear midfielders.

They did hit the post in the first half with one of their long balls to Paulo Camara, the ex Gilford man who started the year at Gilford only to quit. He run onto long ball, shot past keeper and onto the post. This made their heads drop a bit and the first half ended with Gilford well on top.

The second half started with Gilford remaining on top and making chance after chance without getting the second goal.

Goodyear’s chance was hampered when one of their players was sent off for a second yellow card midway through the second half.

Gilford failed to make the extra man count, making things hard for themselves and not playing their passing game they had been for the match this far.

They did get their second goal of the game late on in the second half which came from a great pass from Colin Fitzpatrick to the feet of Mark Feeney at the edge of the 18 yard box who controlled the ball excellently and then with an outstanding shot drilled the ball into the bottom left corner.

Gilford then closed the game out for a well earned three points and sent Goodyear home with their tails between their legs.
