Rathfriland U13s 8
Lurgan Town U13s 0
On Saturday morning Rathfriland U13s unveiled their new kit kindly sponsored by Barbican SuperValu Rathfriland as they played their first home game of the season against Lurgan Town. The team was hoping to follow up their opening day victory over Portadown Youth with another three league points.
Rathfriland put their Mid Ulster opponents under pressure from the first whistle and opened the scoring when Cormac McElroy latched onto a ball from Jack Rodgers and cooly shot into the bottom corner. Midway through the half some good work on the right from Peter Haughey created an opening for Jack Rodgers to double the lead. Rodgers was then upended in the box for a penalty which was neatly converted by Brendan Tumilty before Jake Morgan tapped in to make in 4 – 0 at the interval.
With the win in the bag the guys focused on their passing game with both McElroy and Rodgers completed their hat-tricks before a Jerome Travers goal and a double from Paudie Clancy sealed the comprehensive victory. Although goals were the story of the day the man of the match was Ryan Mackey who, along with Thomas McKay in defence, never gave the Lurgan Town attack a chance and secured their place at the top of the league table.
