Slane five-a-side team reaches semi-finals

MONEYSLANE entered a five-a-side tournament in Dromore last Saturday and played at Ferris Park in a Relay for Life fundraiser.

Slane did exceptionally well, reaching the semi finals only to be beaten on penalties. With four pitches going at once this was a very well supported tournament and the Slane team cruised through the group with goals coming from Ervine Boyd, Davy Boyd, Robert Malcolmson and Gareth Hamilton in various matches.

The quarter final was a great game against a very skilful team but they simply could not get past Roy Boyd in the Slane nets, saving three one on ones.

When Slane got on the ball they were as impressive and punished the opposition with Joe Porter threading the ball down the wing for Gareth Hamilton to beat his marker, pick out Irvine Boyd who riffled it into the corner of the net.

Slane doubled their lead with the very impressive Ervine Boyd breaking free from the half way line and showing great composure to pick his spot past the keeper. The opposition pulled one back but Slane held firm for the 2-1 victory.

The semi-final saw the lads take on a Lurgan Town team and this was another tight game with few clear cut chances, although Boyd made two good saves from thunderous shots. Good defending from Robert Malcolmson, Davy Boyd and Joe Porter and quick breaks from Gareth Hamilton and Ervine Boyd kept the Lurgan team on their toes and it was to go to penalties.

At full time it was 0-0. Lurgan Town went on to win 4-1 on penalties, Roy Boyd scoring Slane’s only goal.
