Rathfriland Swifts win derby with Dromore as U7s meet

Saturday morning was a perfect day for football. The Swifts welcomed the lads from Dromore and were keen to put on a good display for their new kit sponsor, Philip Moorehead of 3 Interiors.

Midway through the first half it was an excellent exchange between Burns and Ingram that released Teer through the heart of the Dromore defence and when faced with the oncoming keeper Teer coolly slotted the ball past him to make it 1-0.

Dromore did rally but with Hamilton and Pollock’s strong tackling the Dromore front line were unable to get a shot on goal. Some great footwork by Johnston on the wing saw him skip past a few defenders and when his shot was saved by the Dromore keeper the rebound fell kindly to McKee who’s effort did hit the back of the net.

Dromore’s lone striker was very quick and when he did get past the Swifts defence Maginn was equal to the challenge and he managed to get down low on two occasions to deny the striker. A period of prolonged pressure saw the Swifts get a few back to back corners and as Scott Chambers drilled in a corner from the right the power and accuracy of his corner saw the ball hit a Dromore defender and cross over behind the line to make it 3-0.

Before the first half finished the Dromore lads did have a few more shots on goal but Maginn was in fine form and saved again and again to keep the Swifts 3-0 up at the break.

With 12 minutes remaining Dromore did get on the score sheet with a strike from distance.

Jordan Magowan had a shot blocked at the near post and Burns also went close to getting his name on the scoresheet. A great long pass from Hamilton in defence found Ingram and as he turned his marker and shot it was saved on the line by the Dromore goalkeeper.

The rebound from the save when high into the air and as the goalkeeper lost track of it Teer and a Dromore defender scrambled to get a foot on the ball with Teer’s studs getting enough of a contact to send the ball over the line and into the net 4-1.

In the dying seconds the pacey Dromore striker was through again only to be denied again by Tiernan Maginn to ensure the game finished 4-1 to the Swifts. It was an entertaining game of football between the two teams which was played in great spirit.
