Moneyslane U18s exit the Harry Cavan Cup after extra time

Slane bowed out of the Harry Cavan Cup, but can at least be thankful that they avoided any serious injuries following a bruising encounter against an ill-disciplined Braniel team.

The game was brought to life when a free kick was only partially cleared and Jamie Dickson despatched the ball into the net in fine style from the edge of the box - a magnificent strike.

After four minutes of the second period the visitors were level as they capitalised on some poor positional play. Davy Blakely entered the fray shortly afterwards in an attempt to shore things up at the back and it worked for a while.

But inability to take control in the middle of the park proved costly as a Braniel player raced through unchallenged to slot home for 2-1 on 74 minutes.

That lead lasted only for six minutes as a great run and cross from Adair was poked home by the impressive Kurtis Bain. As extra time loomed Adam Rowland, who was a commanding presence in the Moneyslane goal throughout the game, pulled off a breathtaking save to deny Braniel a normal time winner. Towards the end of the game the Braniel team completely lost their discipline and had a player dismissed for assaulting the referee. Quite how others did not follow was hard to fathom as the visiting players launched a vile tirade of foul mouthed abuse at the official.

Just as it looked like the game would go to penalties, lack of concentration at the back proved costly as a Braniel player somehow found himself unmarked on the 6 yard line and he made no mistake in firing home the winner with 2 minutes to go.
