Rathfriland U11’s 4 Lurgan Town U11’s 3
Rathfriland U11’s first ever home game in the Mid Ulster League turned out to be a thriller with the home side clinging on to secure victory.
The locals started the game at a high tempo with Rhys McKee and Thomas Ingram leading the way with some great challenges in the middle of the park which allowed the front men to create a few chances.
Caolán Teer almost opened the scoring only to see his shot crash off the cross bar and out to safety. On 15 minutes however Rathfriland deservedly took the lead with Ben Johnston smashing home with his left foot after being set up by some clever work from Scott Chambers. It was soon two when Thomas Ingram blasted in his first of the season.
The visitors recovered from the shock and started to put Rathfriland under pressure, however, the back three of Ethan Hamilton, Paul Travers and Mark Bronte seemed in control.
Rathfriland then went 3 – 0 up thanks to the right foot of Ben Johnston only to see the visitors strike back beating the impressive Leon Shimmons in goal with a high shot.
Just before the break however, Darren Sloane found Rhys McKee who got a well deserved goal to make it 4 - 1.
The second half saw the home team come under pressure and Lurgan reduced the lead to one with five minutes to go however, Scott Chambers almost sealed it at the death with a clever header that shaved the top of the cross bar.
