RATHFRILAND U8s lined up for their first game together in the games Development centre at St. Colman’s College, and what a debut it was.
Although the lads started slowly and went a goal down after two minutes they soon hit back with a neat finish from Eoghan Travers followed by a run and shot from Ronan Burns. Eoin Grant and Eoin Gribben where magnificent in defence and were putting in some crunching tackles as the first period progressed.
It was the second period however, when Rathfriland really put their foot on the gas with the hard working Frazer Shilliday on Eoin Gribben in midfield allowing the front men to take control. Camlough just could not handle the pace a skill of the classy Travers and he slotted in another five goals before the break with Burns grabbing his second of the game with a magnificent header.
A gutsy Camlough did fight back with a couple of goals of their own but it was a wonder strike from new man Frazer Shilliday that stopped the rot. Frazer pounced on a breaking ball in midfield, looked up and unleashed an unstoppable Beckam like shot from the halfway line for the goal of the game, if not the season.
The final period saw Rathfriland run riot with Grant capping a fine debut with his first for the club, Travers bagging another five and Burns completing a well deserved hat-trick.
Coach Joe Ervine said, “We wanted to try out these guys at a higher level and they all stepped up to the mark in fine style.”
