WITH only two more Saturdays in February qualifying for the match-play stages of the winter league is becoming a very tense affair.

The light persistent rain did not deter a good turnout on Saturday for the start of week 14 of Rockmount Golf Club’s 2012/2013 competition.

Marten Mearns (13) was the out-right winner with a score of 30 points. Second and third place scored the same score 29 points with Michael McCormick (6) second on count back and Tony Wilson (20) third.

Five players scored 26 points - Ian Harvey (18) was fourth and Stephen Clarke (13) was fifth.

For the second week in a row the best gross went to Ed McDonald. Ed cut to scratch after last Saturday’s superb round had a one over par round of 49.

With only a few weeks left until the top two teams in each league are finalized and entered into the quarter finals; all points gained at this stage are vital.

In league A, ‘Handcuffed to an Idiot’ are on 725 but last week’s second placed team, ‘Reece’s Wonders’ 713 have been pushed down to third; ‘Anything but Hockey’ 717 re-assuming second place.

In league B, ‘This is Madness’ have 745 and ‘Oggie and the Sprinkler Heads’ remain second with 735.

In league D, the runaway leaders ‘Frankly Awful’ have 731 and the new second placed team ‘Shanksville Duffers’ have 725, last week’s equal leaders ‘Joseph’s Dream Team’ have dropped to fifth in there league, a long way behind on 708 points.

The scores take into account the four dropped scores. In the singles competition’s (0-13) section; Mark Stewart 236 the long time leader has dropped to fifth.

The new leader is Peter Brown 240 closely followed by Paul Mearns on 239; in (13.1-18.5) section, Competition Secretary Frank Wallace 241 has opened up a four point lead on second place Stephen Gilmore 237; in the (18.6-28) section Peter Rowntree last week’s leader dropped seven places to eighth; the new leader is Arthur Holywood on 234 with John McGrath second on 233.

On Wednesday evening, February 6 2013 almost 30 members, committee members and staff of Rockmount Golf Club attended a course in Emergency First Aid which included Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator.

The course was sponsored by Ballynahinch Lions Club and the training was given by Mr D Barkley RGN and Dr R T S Harrison GCST.G, KStG, MB.
