Christmas tournament shakes off the cobwebs after winter break

FERRIS Park never stays quiet for too long and after a short break to indulge in turkey and trimmings and carbo load for the rest of the season Saturday December 29 brought a large squad out in force to fit some hockey in before the New Year rings in.

Around 50 players arrived at Ferris for a social tournament and get together.

The U15s were out in force, joined by players from throughout the senior club teams, a few determined veterans and a few Banbridge men players joined the mix and it was great to have some of our university players return who are away playing at the moment while they study.

The kit was an ensemble of Dromore blue and navy, Banbridge red and yellow and a few crazy sock that were obviously brought by Santa.

Despite the very heavy rain and black clouds as everyone travelled to Ferris the skies were blue and the sunshine was out as games commenced, even though it was biting cold on fingers but that didn’t last as a lot of hockey followed and everyone was quickly warmed up.

Play was fast and furious despite the social side but alot of laughs were had and the craic was mighty.

Goalies were given alot of action and the scoreline in the early matches was 7-7 leading to penaltyshots to determine the winners, the umpiring was great even though there was alot of queries on the scoreline but it was all about the play and noone was really kwwping count.

It was great to see alot of fabulous goals plus a few lucky ones into the net despite the hardworking defence.

The coaches were still coaching throughout, determined never to miss a moment to develop play or encourage players.

After the initial games we finished with a full pitch match before heading to the clubhouse for a delicious spread organised by Andrea and Cathy with very welcome hot soup to warm the bones and of course more mince pies. A big thank-you to them for the delicious eats.

It was a great few hours of hockey and laughs were had and a little bit of turkey was run off.

Happy New Year from all at Dromore Ladies Hockey Club and the club looks forward to more hockey action in the New Year as they continues to grow and prosper. The club hopes for further success as the teams perform well in their leagues.
