Can Jonathan catch Philip?

THE top 20 in the Golfer of the Year Order of Merit, on the 13th of August, are as follows:

Philip Mallon 611 points; Jonathan Ward 595; Colin McKinney 581; Kevin Smyth 508; Alastair McCully 488; Timothy Beattie 472; Alan Dale 464; Neil Clydesdale 426; Albert Morrison 425; Matthew Mallon 419; Colin Wilton 412; Shane Bell 404; Luke Woods 389; John Convery 388; Stuart Hunter 382; Joe Glass 380; Dennis Watt 369; Eamon McAnarney 369;John McDowell 358 and Peter Hillen 340.

There are still eight weeks to go, with two counting competitions each week.

Anything can happen but the key to success, to my way of thinking, is to play in all the Thursday Opens. Lots of points can be picked up there. You can debate whether that is right or wrong but that’s the way it is for this year anyway.

Jonathan Ward is going to get extra points for his performance in the matchplay and that could prove crucial.

It will be a battle to the finish, that’s for sure.
