THE Banbridge Rossmore Cup team, captained by Jim Matthews, had a tough draw in round one. They met Nuremore, always a difficult team to beat.
The first leg was played at Nuremore and the Banbridge team came away with a very satisfying 2-2 draw.
Joe Glass and Kenny Arlow lost by 2 and 1.
Cathal McNiff and Cecil Wilson won 4 and 3.
Jim Matthews and John Gallagher lost 6 and 4.
Morris Phillips and Alex Clarke won 1 up.
That was an excellent result over a very demanding Nuremore course.
The second leg was played at Banbridge last Sunday afternoon.
At the halfway stage, it was anyone’s game. Team captain, Jim Matthews, was a worried man.
Morris Phillips and Alex Clarke lost 2 and 1 against Kevin Kelly and Gerry Eakin. That put Nuremore 3-2 ahead and in a strong position.
Joe Glass and Kenny Arlow played brilliantly to beat Cormac Lane and Gerard Birdy by 4 and 3. With two games still alive, the score was level at 3 – 3.
Cathal McNiff and Cecil Wilson combined perfectly to beat Shane Cassidy and Steven Quigley 5 and 3.
In the final game, Gareth Matthews and Mel Hylands halved with Charles Dolan and Pat Sheridan.
So the final score was Banbridge 4.5 Nuremore 3.5.
Jim Matthews must now prepare his team for a second round match against either Warrenpoint or Rockmount. Happy days!
After the way they played against Nuremore, the Banbridge team should fear no one.
