MARK Sloan (16), a member of Dromore and District Angling Club recently competed at the Youth International for the Irish Team at Llandegfedd Reservoir in Wales.
Mark secured his place on the team through a qualifier held on Lough Bane in Co Westmeath in April 2008.

Mark travelled to Wales with local fishing enthusiast Donald McClearn and a team of 14 Juveniles from various clubs throughout Ireland. The co
mpetition was held on August 7 with the practice days on the August 5-6.

Mark caught nine fish on the first and five fish on the second practice day despite the tough conditions with bright sunshine. On the competition day the conditions were very good. The weather was warm but overcast with a slight breeze.

Mark had an excellent bag of 12 trout resulting in him achieving Top Irish Rod, showing that he is amongst the best youth anglers in Ireland. Overall Ireland was placed third tightly behind Scotland with England securing victory.

Not only was this achievement excellent for his team, Mark came second overall out of the top 56 competitors from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

Mark said, "I am delighted to have achieved Top Irish Rod. Through this competition I have gained a lot of experience fishing at the highest level for Ireland. Overall I had a brilliant time at the competition making new friendships."

Many thanks from Mark go to all the coaches and the fly tyer for their advice, encouragement and giving up of their time. Also a special word of thanks goes to George Behan, the Youth Officer, for organising practise weekends and ensuring the smooth running of the competition.

Meanwhile Mark has qualified for the competition next year to be held in England in 2010.
