IT was a day for relaxing in the sun, a day for the beach, a day for a barbeque with friends or day for watching the climax of the football season with a chilled beer.
However for Millpark it was a day of sweating and running round an all too large pitch in east Belfast.
The villagers made the trip to Creagh where their hosts took full advantage of winning the toss and electing to bat. The large sloping green pitc
h must have seemed twice as large in the blistering sun as Creagh, buoyed by the inclusion of two professional cricketers raced to a tally of 252.
Though the bowling figures were not impressive it should be noted that Daryl Martin and David Maxwell picked up a few wickets each.
After tea and as the sun cooled Millpark's father and son double act took to the crease. S McCart Senior and Junior, Steven and Stuart, both amassed a total of 17 before losing their wickets; Stuart LBW and Stevie caught near the boundary.
Youngster Jordan Willis, coming in at number three, could not follow up his cup heroics of the previous week and registered with six runs before being dismissed LBW while experienced campaigners Daryl Martin and Johnny Breen could not better the youngsters tally scoring a total of five runs between them.
252 was always going to be an unattainable target for the men from Millpark but by now a target of 100 seemed even further away, but this was before Nelson Shanks and Ray Menown started the valiant fight back.
Playing some exquisite shots both Menown and Shanks put the Creagh celebrations on hold and frustrated their hosts.
After Shanks had departed, bowled for 24, Ray Menown continued his one man assault on the Creagh bowlers. Aided by partners Jason Maxwell and John 'Duck' McDowell, Menown registered 67 runs before finally being bowled.
Millpark needing over 60 runs and with little more than three overs to do it but batted on bravely and it was only in the final few delivers that they ultimately surrendered their wickets, David Maxwell being the lost to fall at the crease.
So with a total just shy of 190 Millpark came away defeated but not demoralised. The weather had drained them but for the villagers there was at least one Ray of sunshine.
