Scarva Canal is '˜overflowing with tourist potential'

Scarva canal is '˜overflowing with tourist potential' according to DUP MLA Carla Lockhart who she wants to see the waterways in Upper Bann better utilised by activity and sports enthusiasts.

Speaking after walking along the Scarva towpath with representatives from Inland Waterways (Newry and Portadown branch) and seeing at first hand the potential for better use of the facilities Carla Lockhart expressed her support for what they hope to achieve.

“I certainly see the long term benefit not just for Scarva but the entire route from Portadown to Newry to attract tourists and build a more healthy lifestyle,” she said.

“Inland Waterways are supportive of conservation.

“We have so much to offer in this area and the canal is overflowing with potential for tourists and locals to explore by bike, canoe or on foot. We would want to see this route on a par with other parts of the island utilised and accessed by many people.”
