The council will be giving away hundreds of bags of free compost at recycling centres across the Borough on the Saturday morning to promote Compost Awareness Week which will be running from 1 to 7 May.

Residents can come and collect their compost, (one bag per household) on a first come, first served basis.

Compost is availble from a number of centre, including at the following local recycling centres.

Banbridge Recycling Centre, Scarva Road Banbridge, Sat: 8.30am-6pm

• Dromore Recycling Centre, Mossvale Road, Dromore, Sat: 8.30am-6pm

• Rathfriland Recycling Centre, Ballyroney Road, Rathfriland, Saturday, 8.30am-6pm

Supplied by Natural World Products in Armagh and Portadown, the compost is made up from the garden waste which is collected through the brown bin scheme and garden waste recycled at Council’s recycling centres.

Staff will also be on hand to show residents what happens to food and garden waste after it is collected from their homes and the recycling centres.

Compost is full of nutrients making it excellent for feeding plants and the humus in it helps to retain moisture in the soil – so as well as maintaining a beautiful garden you will also be helping the environment.

The annual compost giveaway is always hugely popular, so make your way as early as you can to your local recycling centre to claim your free bag of compost before stocks run out.

To ensure that only to residents within the Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council area receive them, please bring along proof of your address.
