A young Banbridge man has been awarded the accolade of ‘Rookie Volunteer of the Year’ at the annual Youth Initiatives Volunteer Awards held in Belfast recently.

Stevie McKay was given the award in recognition of his volunteering with various Youth Initiatives’ youth work projects in the area including detached work (engaging with young people on the street)and the Edge programme where he planned and delivered games and drama sessions.

He also volunteers on the young mens’ football programme. This summer he will assist with the summer scheme in July and the Youth Initiatives’ camp in August.

Youth Initiatives is a registered charity which was formed back in 1991 as a cross-community youth work which aims to inspire young people to contribute to their own communities. A charity spokesperson said, “Stevie McKay’s great achievement is an inspiration to everyone.”
