New drama workshops tackle race issues

A NUMBER of drama workshops are scheduled to take place in the Banbridge district as part of a new socially inclusive project headlined by Dublin-based Smashing Times Theatre Company,

The theatre company, in collaboration with Corrymeela Community/Irish Peace Centres, has announced the workshops as part of a new project ‘Acting for Change’ which is part-funded through the EU Peace III Programme.

The programme is promoted by Armagh City and District Council on behalf of the Southern Cluster Partnership which consists of the Banbridge, Armagh, Newry and Mourne and Craigavon council areas.

There will be 16 drama workshops in total - eight to promote anti-racism and eight to promote anti-sectarianism. They will be conducted with schools, youth groups and communities in the Banbridge and Craigavon, Armagh and Newry and Mourne districts.

“The aim is to use drama to break down silences and raise awareness of issues surrounding racism and sectarianism,” said a spokesperson. “They will take place in areas including those experiencing economic disadvantage and interface areas and will be accessible and informative for everyone taking part.”

Participants do not need to have any previous knowledge of drama and any local schools or youth groups interested in organising a workshop should contact Freda Manweiler on 00 353 18656613 or email freda@smashingtimes.ie
