Man made threat to post intimate photo online

After he split up with his girlfriend a 27-year-old man threatened to post an intimate photograph of her on social media, Banbridge Magistrates Court heard last Thursday.

Liam Sean Coleman, Moyraverty Gardens, Craigavon, admitted common assault on a female on November 16 last year, harassment and sending by means of a communications network an offensive voicemail.

For each offence he was sentenced to four months in prison. The sentences are to run concurrently and were suspended for two years.The court heard that on November 29 last year the injured party attended at Lurgan police station.

She said that she had split up with her boyfriend two weeks before and during an argument when she tried to recover her phone he threw her on a bed and raised a fist at her.

The victim also said she had received numerous calls from him and had to block him but she still received a voicemail which contained verbal abuse and he threatened to post an intimate photograph of her on social media.

She was also worried when he spoke about blue lights because she was staying at the time at her mother’s house which had blue lights.

The case had been adjourned from a previous court for a pre-sentence report to be obtained.

Coleman presented himself at Lurgan police station when he knew police were looking for him.

He accepted sending the messages but said he remembered the blue lights from the year before and had not been near the mother’s house.

Coleman’s solicitor, Siun Downey, said her client was extremely embarrassed and regretted his actions.

He now had no contact with the injured party.She asked the court to consider leaving something hanging over the defendant.

District Judge Eamonn King told Coleman it was ‘disgraceful behaviour on your part’ and asked him if had deleted the photograph.

Coleman said he had got a new phone a couple of weeks after the incident.

The judge said the photograph was the ‘most sinister aspect’ to the case but added there were some positive things in the pre-sentence report in the defendant’s favour.

He added that Coleman had been remorseful and since this incident nothing further had happened.
