Teens attacked in town centre in broad daylight

TWO serious assaults on teenage boys have taken place in the space of three days in broad daylight in Banbridge town centre.

A twelve-year-old was kicked and punched as a group of young people watched on Tuesday August 21 in the grounds of Holy Trinity Parish Church in Church Square.

Just two days later a 15-year-old was punched in the face in what police have called an unprovoked attack in Newry Street at 2.30pm in the afternoon.

Police are appealing for information on both incidents.

The 12-year-old’s mum, said she was horrified to learn that her son had been beaten up and left with a bruised face following the attack.

A video of the incident was sent to various Blackberry Messenger phones, Lisa said.

“I saw the video the next day through a friend and it was just awful,” she told the Leader. “It shows a group of about 15 young people - girls and boys. The two people who did this kicked his face and head.”

The mother said she has given names of the alleged attackers to police.

“He didn’t want to tell me because he thinks we’ve been through enough. He was scared and he didn’t want to annoy us.”

Local PSNI confirmed they have viewed the video footage and are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

Despite two police appeals regarding the attack of the 15-year-old boy, no-one has yet been charged in relation to the incident.

The attacker was said to be wearing a purple t-shirt and a number of people helped the teenager following the attack.

Anyone with information on either incident is urged to contact police on 0845 600 8000 or 0800 555 111.
