Pupil ‘launched missile’ from school bus

A SCHOOL pupil threw a lit firework at a group of other students while they waited for a bus in Banbridge.

The Banbridge High pupil is understood to have thrown the firework from the bus last Wednesday October 17 as it pulled up outside Banbridge Academy where it was collecting pupils at the end of the school day.

No-one was injured in the incident but both the High School and Translink said they recognised the potentially serious consequences of the incident.

High School principal Andrew Bell said the matter was “dealt with” internally - it is understood the pupil in question was identified almost immediately.

“The school is always very concerned that in travelling to and from school its pupils can travel in safety.

“We are grateful to Translink, members of the public and others who make us aware of any incidents that might put such safety and welfare at risk so that they may be dealt with.”

Translink said a prefect travelling on the bus reported the incident - in which they said a pupil had ‘launched a missile’ - to the driver as well as the High School principal, who then spoke to passengers using that service the following day.

“The safety of our passengers and employees is a key priority for Translink,” said a spokeswoman.

“We take all activities of this nature very seriously and where appropriate we will work with the relevant school and/or Education and Library board to take suitable action.”

It is understood pupils at Banbridge High School received their annual firework safety talk later that week.
