Part of A1 to close for resurfacing

THE final phase of the resurfacing work will take place on the A1 dual carriageway between Banbridge and Dromore this weekend.

Work has been ongoing in the area for the past two weekends and the final scheme, involving the southbound carriageway between Grove Road and Mount Ida Road, will take place between 9pm Friday September 7 and 6am Monday September 10.

Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy said, “These essential works will represent a considerable investment in the road network and will strengthen this section of the A1 so that it can carry today’s very high traffic volumes, provide good skidding resistance, an even running surface, prevent the formation of surface defects and will reduce road noise thereby improving the safety and comfort of road users.”

During the resurfacing work one lane will operate in each direction via a contra-flow system on the northbound carriageway. A temporary 40mph speed limit will also be in operation throughout the works. There will also be restrictions on traffic wanting to enter or leave the A1 within the works areas. A traffic diversion will be in place via Diamond Road, Gall Bog Road and Waringsford Road for all traffic leaving Dromore and wanting to travel southbound on the A1.

The Minister said, “The works operations and traffic management arrangements have been carefully programmed to minimise inconvenience to the travelling public, local residents and business. The works will be restricted to weekend and overnight, however, some disruption will be unavoidable and we would ask that motorists be patient as these essential works progress.”

The exact dates and times of the A1 closures for these resurfacing works will depend on weather conditions and scheme progression and therefore could be subject to change.

Precise details of all the closures and other lane restrictions are available to view on the Traffic Watch website: http://www.trafficwatchni.com.
