PARENTS ANGRY AT SPEED LIMIT PLANS
A PROPOSAL to increase the speed limit on the Scarva Road has caused further outcry from parents in the area, as well as Banbridge District Council.
The Leader reported that a Roads Service letter to the council in December outlined plans to increase the limit on part of the Scarva Road from 30 miles per hour to 40 miles per hour, but some readers have since made clear their opposition to the plan.
The opinions of parents and residents were shared by many council members at a recent meeting and a formal letter registering concern at the plans was sent from the council to the Roads Service.
The Leader understands the PSNI requested a review of the current speed limit, saying the current one is not appropriate.
A spokesperson for the Department of Regional Development said, "The PSNI requested Roads Service to review the existing speed limit and the review indicates that a 40mph speed limit is more appropriate for this stretch of road."
Laura Caughey, a resident in the area, expressed her disbelief at the proposals. She said, "The speed the cars go up and down that road is mad.
"The police need to be on the Scarva Road slowing the cars down not speeding them up."
The DRD spokesperson added, "Consultation has already started involving Banbridge District Council and the PSNI. In approximately three months the proposal will be advertised in the local press."
Councillor Joan Baird raised her concerns at this month's council meeting.
"There is a bend which doesn't give a clear-cut view and it's a built-up area," she said
"The 30 miles per hour zone should go all the way to the Point Road."
However, while most of the council agreed with Mrs Baird's points, Councillor John Hanna said 40 miles per hour is a "more appropriate" limit for the Road.
