NORWAY! LORRAINE LANDS A WHOPPER

A FORMER hairdresser from Banbridge has been making the headlines in her adopted home of Norway after catching a wild salmon weighing nearly a whopping 18kgs!

38-year-old Lorraine Srensen, formerly Avery, was fishing with a six-foot rod in the Vesteralen district of Norway last weekend expecting to catch a pollock when something bigger took her bait.

It was a wild salmon weighing 17.8kg – and with the help of her husband, Jay and her mother-in-law Bemte – they struggled but eventually coaxed the fish into a net.

Fishing at Vestbygdda, located in the northern region of Norway, Lorraine's feat was captured on camera by her father-in-law Sren and amid the excitement a crowd of on-lookers gathered to cheer her on.

Since then, the Banbridge woman's amazing catch has caught the attention of a number of leading newspapers and magazines in Norway.

Lorraine, who ran hairdressing business New Dimensions in Linenhall Street before leaving Banbridge three years ago to live in the Nordic country.

Her parents, Mary and Jackie who live in Reilly Park, say they're "incredibly proud" of their daughter whose feat is in the running for a prestigious competition in the 'biggest catch of the year' category.

"Lorraine has always enjoyed fishing but since she moved to Norway she's had the opportunity to fish much more often," said Mary.

"Since it happened she's had calls from various Norwegian newspapers and magazines and she is going to do an interview with a publication called 'Fishing Rod'. I was speaking to her on the phone and I just said to her, 'It's like you've become a bit of a celebrity."

Mary says that her daughter is planning on having a sit-down meal with her family to eat the 18kg salmon, which is currently being smoked in a factory.

"The fish is absolutely massive and I'm sure it will be a real occasion and there will be plenty to go around. It's just amazing and we're really proud of her," she added.
