New social housing for two sites in Lisburn

THERE has been a double boost for people on the housing waiting list in Lisburn this week with news that two housing associations are planning new social housing in the Lisburn North and Hillhall areas of the city.

Helm Housing, formerly known as BIH Housing Association, have revealed plans to build six houses in Tirowen Drive and Connswater Homes are seeking planning permission to construct 19 social housing units on the site of the former Hillhall Primary School.

Helm Housing have submitted a planning application for six new dwellings for small and large family households on the site of the old Tirowen Hostel. The housing mix consists of five three bedroom houses and one four bedroom house.

If planning permission is granted, it is anticipated the scheme will commence on site in March 2011 and be completed around March 2012.

According to Helm Housing, the scheme has been designed to respect the quality of the surrounding dwellings and the scale, materials and details of the proposed scheme have been designed and chosen to complement and enhance the local neighbourhood.

Jean Fulton, Group Chief Executive of Helm Housing, said they were working with the Northern Ireland Housing Executive to transform the site.

"We are delighted to contribute to further regeneration in the area and this adds to the 45 new homes which Helm has provided in the area over the last number of years" she said.

Connswater Homes are proposing to redevelop the site of the former Hillhall Primary School on the Hillhall Road to provide nine three bedroom houses, six two bedroom houses, two two bedroom apartments and two two bedroom wheelchair apartments.

In total the association will, if planning permission is granted, spend in the region of 2.5 million on the scheme, which will also include open space and parking.
