MBE for Rugby Club President

THE President of Banbridge Rugby Club has been awarded an MBE.

A farmer for 40 years, John Best, who hails from Newry, received an MBE for his services to the agri-food industry in Northern Ireland.

John is well-known in farming circles, particularly in his role as chairman of the seeds and cereals committee with the Ulster Farmers’ Union.

Commenting on the award, John said: “I was very surprised – pleasantly surprised – and honoured.

“The award is a reflection on all the people who have worked with me over the years.”

John is the father of Irish rugby internationals Rory and Simon Best. John’s wife Pat received an MBE from the Queen in December last year, and the Best family can now look forward to another day out at Buckingham Palace.
