IRISH PREMIER IN TOWN

PRESIDENT of Ireland Mary McAleese arrived in Banbridge on Monday on her first ever official visit to the town.

On her arrival the Irish Premier wasted no time in getting to grips with local issues, firstly dropping in on Banbridge Academy, before making the short journey to St. Patrick's College.

She met with staff and pupils at both schools, hearing first hand the successes of local students and listening to issues affecting local education.

Accompanied by her husband Dr Martin McAleese, the VIP entourage made its way to the local council offices around noon where the Irish Head of State addressed local councillors and met with the Lord Lieutenant of County Down, William J Hall, and some fifty representatives from the local community and voluntary sector.

In the afternoon it was off to Seapatrick Parish Centre to meet with Banbridge and District Clergy Fellowship.
