HELP AT HAND FOR SPOOKY GOINGS ON
IF there's something strange in your neighbourhood, who ya gonna call? Well the Ghostbusters haven't been seen in a while so your best chance of getting to the bottom of any strange goings on is contacting the Northern Ireland Paranormal Society.
Led by local man Darren Ansell, the team's main aim is to investigate all reports of alleged paranormal occurrences, taking a balanced and fresh approach in each case.
"We also spend time debunking claims of the paranormal, where after exhausting all possibilities no supporting evidence can be found, or indeed where evidence to the contrary is uncovered," said Darren.
"We are here more importantly to help and give guidance to anyone who may be suffering paranormal activity in their homes or public/private locations.
"The group is made up of both believers and sceptics and when we begin an investigation we do so with a scientific approach when we will always try and find a scientific reason for whatever is going on in that location."
And to help them draw their final conclusions during an investigation the group is armed to the teeth with an array of technical equipment from simple laptop computers to geiger counters and carbon monoxide detectors.
RADIATION
They use geiger counters as varying levels of ionising radiation have been detected in some locations where paranormal activity has been reported. Ionising radiation is a cause of increased concentrations of positively charged air ions.
And it has been reported that even in cases of low CO concentration this can cause individuals to have feelings often associated with a paranormal experience, including in rare cases, hallucination so this is why the group uses carbon monoxide detectors.
The group are also heavily involved in putting the claims of 'mediums' to the test.
"There are a lot of people out there who claim to be mediums but the vast majority of them have no ability whatsoever," said Darren.
"We know their tricks inside out and we can test them to find out if they legitimate or not."
While a large part of the group's activities are focused on finding everyday reasons for strange occurrences they still come across things they have simply no explanation for.
"The most recent of these was an apparition in Crawfordsburn Park when a lady recorded the image of a man walking along and there is no reasonable explanation for it," said Darren.
"I have to say I am a believer in the paranormal myself and occurrences like this certainly back that belief up."
