AN 81-YEAR-OLD man was left shaken after a fellow driver followed him along the road, forced him to stop his car and threw the keys on the road.

Just before 2pm on Sunday afternoon an the elderly man was driving from Hilltown to Rathfriland at a speed of around 30mph when a blue car journeyed behind him for some time flashing their headlights.

The blue car passed and pulled in front of the motorist before stopping. A young male got out of the blue car, approached the driver’s door of the other vehicle, took the keys out of the ignition and dropped them on the ground before getting back in the blue car and driving off.

Police said the elderly driver was left very shaken by the incident.

Banbridge Neighbourhood Inspector Jacqueline Gillespie said expressed her disgust at the incident.

“This is a very disturbing incident where an elderly gentleman has been intimidated by a young driver who has forced him to stop,” said Inspector Gillespie. “We have drivers of every age and gender on our roads and no one has the right to intimidate another.

“Everyone on our roads has a responsibility to ensure the safety, not only of themselves, but of everyone else using the road at that particular time.

“We are very keen to speak to the occupants of the blue car and would ask them to contact us. We would also ask any member of the public who has information in relation to this incident to contact us in Banbridge on 0845 600 8000.”
