A VETERAN member of Dromara Cycling Club, Ted McKibben, has been left paralysed after an accident during the Magherafelt Grand Prix on Saturday.

Police received a report of the road traffic collision around 3.20pm on Saturday, involving a car and a cyclist on the Draperstown Road in Tobermore.

According to reports, the Dromara CC rider was avoiding a crash in the group when he hit the windscreen of an oncoming car.

He was treated at the scene and taken by ambulance to Antrim Area Hospital.

He was later transferred for more specialist treatment to the Royal Victoria in Belfast, with his club Dromara CC confirming on their website that the collision had left him paralysed.

According to their website Martin Grimley, secretary of Dromara CC managed to get in to see Ted.

“I got to see Ted,” he stated. “He was in good spirits considering. For those of you who know Ted well you will know his fighter attitude.

“He did thank those who helped him. I relayed the well wishes I have received to pass onto him. We should spare a thought for the motorist who was involved.”

The accident occurred in the closing stages of the 32 mile race. The crash caused a blockage in the road which forced the promoting club Spires CC to halt the A&B races.

Initially when the riders fell, it was not clear that the crash had such serious consequences and as the race was almost over when the collision occurred, the Masters event was completed.

Earlier cyclists were warned of greasy roads. Keith Millar of North Down ended up with a broken collar bone and required hospital attention following a collision.
