Course offers Access to a range of careers
JOHN Brankin is delighted to have received an offer from Queen’s University following his successfully completion of the Access Diploma in Adult Learning at the Banbridge Campus of the Southern Regional College.
Offered in conjunction with the University of Ulster, SRC’s Access Diploma in Adult Learning represents an exciting opportunity for adults over the age of 19 with no formal qualifications to study for university entrance.
The course is a radical alternative to the more traditional GCSEs and “A” Levels and is delivered by lecturers with many years’ experience teaching adult returners.
The course runs from 6.30pm to 9.30pm every Tuesday and Thursday evening during term.
John is looking forward to starting Queen’s to study the part-time degree in business management. John said, “The course has helped me on my way to achieving what I hope will be a life changing experience for my family and me.”
Jamie-Kyle Moore is another student who has completed the Access course on the Banbridge Campus.
Jamie-Kyle commented, “I had been out of education for six years and sought an opportunity to improve my qualifications and ultimately gain a place at University. I studied the Adult Access course on a part time basis at the Southern Regional College, Banbridge.
“This course was challenging yet rewarding and enjoyable as the lecturers are approachable, friendly and very supportive. It was a fantastic gateway into University and this September I am due to start studying Law with Politics at the University of Ulster, Jordanstown. “
In total, it takes two academic years to complete the course. Year one of the course consists of studying Maths and English to GCSE standard and successful completion of the first year is equivalent to 5 GCSEs (including English and Mathematics).
Year two consists of four subjects – Sociology, Psychology, English Literature and History and is equivalent to three “A” Levels. All subjects are assessed by coursework and examination.
Many past students who have completed their studies have progressed to degrees in law, social work, teaching and Theology. Others have opted for studying subjects such as Politics, Psychology, English, Criminology and History. Coupled with a separate GCSE in Biology, year two students can also apply for Nursing.
