Celebrations to mark Town Hall restoration

TO mark the completion of a major restoration and conservation project aimed at preserving Dromore Town Hall, Banbridge District Council is holding a family fun day in and around the historic Grade B1 listed building on Saturday 30 June 2012 from 2pm to 4pm.

Located in the heart of the town, Dromore Town Hall will become the focal point for a host of activities and entertainment such as face painting, balloon modelling, arts and crafts workshops, magic shows, large garden games, and street entertainers. Well-known cartoon characters such as Peppa Pig and Buzz Lightyear will be dropping in for a visit and Rathfriland Silver Band will perform a medley of delightful sounds.

The two-storey Victorian building, which dates back to 1886, was closed in August 2011 so that work could start on fixing major structural defects and improving safety.

Improvements included a new roof, floor joists, boiler, gutters and downpipes and the brickwork was re-pointed in lime mortar. The clock tower, the building’s most noticeable feature, has been refurbished and the first floor renovated to accommodate the public library. Environmental works have also been undertaken in the surrounding area.

The renovation and conservation work carried out on this iconic building will ensure that current and future generations can continue to use and appreciate the importance of this important local landmark for many years to come.

For further information about the free family fun day, contact Banbridge District Council on 4066 0605.

Said Councillor Carol Black: “This weekend will see our Town Hall re-open its doors for business.

“I want to encourage our local community to support the Library that is essential for the Town and try and recruit new members to use it regularly

“Over the last number of years I have been trying to arrange for a band stand to be erected in Dromore Town Square now with the newly refurbished Town Hall and Town Centre I shall be taking this forward for Dromore and the surrounding areas.”
