CALL FOR REVIEW OF CCTV LOCATIONS IN THE AREA
BANBRIDGE Council want local police chiefs to review the town's current CCTV locations to ensure they are still operating at optimum levels.
The council are also keen that the police consider purchasing a mobile CCTV unit for use in crime and anti-social behaviour hotspots across 'E' district.
There are currently nine CCTV camera locations around the town centre. The sites for the cameras were agreed by local police taking into consideration potential hotspots for crime.
But at a recent council meeting Banbridge councillor Jim McElroy requested that a camera on Commercial Road be adjusted to show the Mall as there have been problems with vandalism in this area.
There had been calls for alley-gating at the Mall but it was discovered there would be a right-of-way issue connected to any such venture.
However if all the traders in the Mall agreed to alley-gating then the process could be put in motion with Roads Service. If one trader refused then the matter cannot be progressed.
Councillor Junior McCrum revealed that a local building contractor had agreed to pay for the installation of alley-gates at both ends of the Mall and would provide shop-owners with keys so they could have full access to their properties when the gates were closed between 8pm and 8am.
The council is also keen for town traders to install security cameras in their premises following consultation and advice from the PSNI's Crime Prevention Officer.
