Boys (14) claim to be collecting for charity

Police in Banbridge are reminding the public to verify the identity of any caller to their home before committing themselves to handing over money or personal details.

The reminder comes following an incident at Pinley Crescent on Monday, 3 September. Police received information about two young boys calling at doors claiming to be collecting for charity. Police attended and spoke to the two 14-year-old boys. They were subsequently arrested and later released on bail pending further enquiries.

Constable Flanigan, Banbridge Response, explained: “Every householder should ask for identification if someone calls to your door unexpectedly, whether they are selling goods or collecting for charity.

“A genuine door to door collector will have a registered charity number, dates and details of any event taking place and the name of the organiser. If you are in doubt or do not feel comfortable, contact police immediately.

“A genuine caller will not mind you taking steps to verify their identity.”

Police in Banbridge can be contacted on 0845 600 8000.
