Bogus callers target elderly women

POLICE are urging people to be on the lookout for bogus callers after two women in their 80's were left shocked when conmen got into a house in Hillsborough on Tuesday afternoon.

A man claiming to be from an organisation called Northern Housing Fund called at her Grove Road house around 2pm showed one of the women his 'card' and said that he was there to check the locks in her home.

He asked one of the women a series of questions about door locks and she brought the man inside to inspect the doors. It was at this point the second householder discovered another man, who covered his face when she saw him, searching one of the bedrooms.

She challenged him and the two men left her house. One of them jumped over a fence to escape.

Police believe that nothing was taken but would like to hear from anyone who may have information that will help them with their enquiries.

The bogus caller is described as being of slight build, around 5ft 6in tall, with mousy brown hair and a thin beard.

He was wearing grey trousers, a navy jersey and shiny black shoes. He is believed to have spoken with a northern English accent.

The second man is described as of average build, over 6ft tall, wearing navy jeans, a navy top and a navy baseball cap.

Police would particualrly like to speak to a woman who was riding a horse and stopped to speak to the women following the incident

They have also advised all householders to take a few simple steps when there is an unexpected caller. Before opening the door they are asked to stop and think - Are you expecting anybody? Do they have an appointment? Secure the door bar or chain before opening the door and always ask for identification, any genuine caller will have no problem supplying this.

Consider using Quick Check, a free phone service on 0800 013 22 90, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Staff will contact the company the caller claims to represent and check their identity on your behalf.

If you think a bogus caller has called at your door report it to the police immediately. Further advice is available from your local Crime Prevention Officer by telephoning 0845 600 8000.
