Asda remains committed to Newry Road plan

ASDA have confirmed their commitment to Banbridge - despite earlier indications they would abandon their plans for the town if Tesco got the go-ahead for a superstore at Bridgewater Park.

Asda announced plans to submit a planning application for a Newry Road store in February 2011, one month before developers at Bridgewater Park were given the green light by then Environment Minister Edwin Poots.

Responding to the Northern Ireland Independent Retail Trade Association’s (NIIRTA) decision to withdraw its Judicial Review against the proposed out of townhypermarket Lisa Rooke, Property Communications Manager for Asda, said: “Asda remains committed to delivering a new store in Banbridge to enable us to deliver more supermarket choice for shoppers and create new employment opportunities in the town.

“As well as carrying a full range of Asda products - including George clothing, Extra Special, Asda brand and Smart Price ranges – Asda also intends to bring a new petrol station that will bring added competiveness to local fuel prices.

“Asda will continue to engage with stakeholders, including NIIRTA, in finalising our plans following this decision. We - and many others in the town - are keen to learn more about Tesco’s intentions for Banbridge, including when they plan to open at Bridgewater Park and what will happen with their existing store.”
