Annual crowd-puller planned after Children In Need success

A TUG-o’-War contest between teams from Dromore Amateurs and the town’s Rugby Club was the successful highlight of a series of events hosted by a local publican in aid of Children in Need.

Despite minimal promotion the Market Square clash of local sporting titans (first bragging rights went to Dromore Rugby Club)drew a large gathering of spectators and plans are now being laid to make the contest an annual crowd-puller.

Martin Mulholland of Mulholland’s on the Square explained that the Tug-o’-War was one of a number of competitions and personal sacrifices that served to raise £370 on the night.

“We said that we would make the donation up to £500,” said Martin, “but afterwards we changed our minds and actually doubled the amount raised, to £740.”

Associated events included a pool competition, Richard Jardine emerging victorious to win a 19in LCD Television donated by PW Sales, Electrical Wholesaler, Banbridge.

In a hair-raising display of personal courage, Wayne Beggs, Sammy Roe and Neil Morton endured the waxing of legs, chest and armpits respectively.

Stuart Maguire of Maguire’s Fast Food Takeaway picked up the prize - donated by Mulhollands - for victory in a popular game of Heads and Tails, while the equally popular Pitch and Toss saw everyone throw a pound at a bottle of vodka in a bid to be closest and so win the bottle (again donated by the hosts) - that game alone raised more than £50.

Ballot prizes, meanwhile, were donated by Thyme Square, Maguire’s, Brown’s Fast Food, Razor’s Edge Barber’s and

Mulhollands.

Martin offered up his sincere thanks to everyone who helped make the night a success.

“We would like to send out our sincere gratitude,” he said, “to everyone who attended the evening and donated and made this night such a success.

“Your generosity was truly outstanding but the cause is such a worthy one.”
