Vandalism at schools needs to be “curbed” is the message from Banbridge Councillor Glenn Barr who was speaking following an incident which saw up to 30 youths cause damage to Banbridge Academy.
Damage was caused to bins and roof tiles at the school on Lurgan Road over the period of June 13 - 15.
The matter was reported to police when they were informed of up to 30 youths seen on the roof of the school.
Mr Barr said: “This type of wanton vandalism needs curbed.
“I am calling on people to be vigilant over the summer holiday and if they see suspicious activity to contact the PSNI on 101 immediately.”
People are being encouraged to help police protect schools in the area over the summer.
Con Murphy, Banbridge Response, said: “This behaviour is unacceptable and we do not want to see it continue into the summer months.
“In this incident bins were emptied and damaged in the school grounds and roof tiles were damaged.
“What those involved do not understand is that the money needed to repair this damage is money that could be used to enhance resources for the pupils at this school.”
He continued: “It is disappointing that young people were seen on the roof of the school over the weekend and no one contacted police.
“This type of antisocial behaviour can be prevented but we need the help of the public, particularly those who live close to schools.
“If you notice activity in school grounds outside of school hours please contact us immediately.”
Councillor Junior McCrum has also urged people to look out for anyone acting suspiciously near schools.
He said: “If the public would keep a look out for anyone in school grounds when they are closed that would be a big help to police.
“Parents need to be aware of where their children are and check that they aren’t getting into trouble.
“We need to take pride in our schools - after all they provide our children with their education and any expenses occurred from damage comes out of the schools’ budgets.
