Every vote counts is message to Dromore
DROMORE Town Hall is to play host to one of a number of events aimed at persuading local people of the importance of voting during elections.
The community-based electoral awareness events have been organised by DUP MLA Mrs. Brenda Hale, across her Lagan Valley constituency, to help highlight the importance of voting, she said, and to help register on the electoral role those people currently unable to vote.
“I have found within Lagan Valley,” said Mrs. Hale, “that there are still large numbers of people who are not registered to vote and are missing out on having their say when it comes to elections.
“There are also many residents who do not vote because they find the process very confusing when it comes to voting for more than one candidate.
“I believe these events will not only help to raise the number of people eligible to vote, but they are aimed at answering the many questions which people have when it comes to voting.”
Dromore DUP Councillor Paul Rankin welcomed the upcoming meeting and thanked Mrs. Hale for what he called “supporting local residents”.
He also urged residents to attend the meeting.
“I would encourage people from Lagan valley and the Dromore area, including the surrounding rural villages, who are unsure if they are registered to vote, or if they have any queries regarding the voting system, to come along to this event,” he said. “As there are two events being held, those who cannot make the Dromore event in the evening can alternatively attend the Moira Orange Hall event, on Friday 8 March from 1.30pm-3.30pm - and vice-versa).”
Welcome for the initiative came too from DUP leader and First Minister Peter Robinson.
“‘Over the last number of weeks there has been a great increase in awareness amongst the community about the need to engage in the political process,” he said. “The most effective way to voice opposition to decisions such as that taken by the three non-unionist parties in Belfast to remove the Union Flag is to have your say at the ballot box.
“Ensuring that you are on the electoral register and using your vote is the only way to help shape Northern Ireland’s future.”
The Dromore meeting is to take place at the Town Hall next Tuesday, February 26, from 6-8pm.
Representatives from the electoral commission will be on hand to offer advice, assist with forms and photographs for electoral identity cards.
