Lucinda White and Astra Scott get ready for their Marie Curie Tea party which will be held in Lisburn Racquets Club on Saturday 17th August from 10am.

A local woman is raising money for Marie Curie Cancer Care - the charity which cared for her terminally ill mother during her last days.

On August 30 Lucinda White, 26, will take part in the charity’s ‘Walk Ten’ event at Stormont Estate to raise money to support the work of Marie Curie Nurses in Northern Ireland. The unique 10km twilight walk is followed by a picnic and entertainment.

Lucinda is walking in memory of her late mother Cynthia who passed away at the age of 63 last September following a battle with cancer.

Joining her is Sara Ralph, a nurse who helped care for Cynthia privately in her home before going to Marie Curie.

Lucinda said: “My sister Victoria is heavily pregnant so she can’t do the walk with me so Sara and other friends are joining me to walk in memory of mum and I am very grateful.”

Lucinda has also organised a Blooming Great tea party to raise funds. It takes place this Saturday, August 17 at Lisburn Racquets Club from 10am - 3pm.

Lucinda explained that her mother, a former primary school teacher, received such good treatment in her final days at the Marie Curie hospice in Belfast that she felt she had to give something back so others can receive this care.

Lucinda knows only too well what the incredible work of the charity means to people with cancer and their families.

She said: “They were incredible. They gave my mum the respect and dignity she deserved and were a tremendous support to us too.

“I can’t thank them enough. Their care and attention was outstanding.”

“When mum went into the hospice, it was a weight off our shoulders as she couldn’t have been in better hands. They gave her the best care and nothing was a problem for them.

“Marie Curie made a difference a real difference when we needed it and we were able to carry out Mum’s last wish,” said Lucinda.

Everyone is welcome to come along to the tea party event where there will be a raffle, tombola and stalls. Lucinda thanks all the local businesses that have donated to the raffle.
