Kept wallet found on bus

When he found a wallet containing £180 on a bus a 37-year-old man kept it because he was short of funds, Craigavon Magistrates Court heard last Friday.

Richard David McCrea, Alfred Terrace, Dollingstown, admitted the theft of a wallet, £180 and the contents on January 1 this year.

He was fined £100 and ordered to pay £180 compensation and a £15 offender’s levy.

The court heard that on January 8 a man reported to police that his son’s wallet had been stolen on a Translink bus.

CCTV identified the defendant as the person who had taken the wallet.

Mr Joe McDonald, representing the defendant, said his client had quite an extensive record but had no convictions for dishonesty.

He explained that the owner of the wallet left it on the bus and this was an opportunistic offence by McCrea.

Mr McDonald added that the defendant deeply regretted what he had done.

He had been short of funds at the time having just lost his job.
