REFLECTING ON PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE

Rural Community Network, through its Rural Community Estates Programme, invited community groups from the Armagh and Newry and Mourne council areas to the Armagh Planetarium recently in order to reflect on their past, appreciate their present and takes steps to determine clear futures.

The event was co hosted by the Regeneration of South Armagh (ROSA).

Groups from Clady, Hamiltonsbawn, Annahugh, Camlough, Bessbrook and Culloville participated in this evening of reflection where participants connected the past and present, acknowledging how far we have moved forward in Northern Ireland.

The attendees viewed a photographic presentation on 'the big screen' which included images of 'the troubles' - illustrating our past - along with photographs of communities' achievements to date – the present.

Lesley Baillie, Programme Co-ordinator said 'The presentation was a powerful illustration of the contrast between the past and the present of the communities represented. The photographs showing how communities have learned how to work together in their common interests captured the colour, variety and vibrancy of their activities.'

The evening included a space show, storytelling and guests were also treated to a specially composed poem by Marie McCartan, a Bard of Armagh finalist, entitled 'Utopia' based on a futuristic Northern Ireland. The evening concluded with participants placing the hopes of their families, communities and Northern Ireland for the future into rockets handmade by the Planetarium.

Michael Hughes, Chief Executive Officer, said 'These aspirations will be followed up by community development support staff from Rural Community Network who will facilitate the future development of a shared community where people wish to learn, live, work and play together'.
