IN THE PICTURE

Rural Community Network and the Upper Bann Institute, Lurgan recently came together to run a successful HNC photography project which focused on issues affecting rural communities.

Each of the fourteen students involved in the project were allocated a theme which depicted challenges and issues for rural people today such as planning, housing, transport, older people, education and training.

The top three students won vouchers from Jessops with Katrina Gwynne-Jones winning the first prize. Following closely in second place was Darren Doherty with Emma Finlay, the third prize winner.

Gerard Ryan, a member of Rural Community Network Board of Directors, said "I was delighted to be asked to be part of the judging panel and was very impressed by the creative interpretation of the allocated themes. Katrina's theme was "Local Government" and she showed a thorough understanding of how this affects rural communities presenting striking images of migrant workers, Section 75 and the Review of Public Administration to name a few'.

Gerard continued 'I hope the project has been as beneficial to the students who took part as it has to Rural Community Network.'

Geraldine McIvor; Head of Faculty for Business, Art, Design and Media expressed her delight with the project saying 'Our students significantly benefit from working to live briefs and they certainly got a wide variety of briefs from Rural Community Network.

This benefits the students for many reasons - it provides variety in their approach to work, allows them to develop and work within real life timescales, develops good working practices and they enjoy being able to put their efforts toward something that will be used in real life.

Geraldine continued 'Rural Community Network is an extremely professional organisation and its confidence in the work that our students produce helps the students gain assurance in their own abilities and the skills they have learnt on the HND Photography course.'
