GILDERNEW MEETS YOUNG FARMERS

MINISTER Michelle Gildernew has met a delegation from the Executive Committee of the Young Farmers' Clubs of Ulster.

Commenting on the meeting, which took place at Parliament Buildings Stormont, the Minister said: "It is encouraging to see that the Young Farmers' remain positive about the future of farming here and are keen to be actively involved in developing the industry and the rural community."

The meeting provided the Minister with an opportunity to listen to the concerns of young people in rural areas and learn more about the role of the Young Farmers' Clubs in rural communities. The Minister continued:"The Young Farmers' Clubs have an important communication function within rural communities.

"It is vital that government and other agencies tasked with developing and implementing strategies for the future, listen carefully to the voice of our young people."

The Minister was impressed with the ideas that the delegation had, particularly in promoting diversity and inclusion and in helping to create sustainable rural communities.

Commenting on the available support from DARD to help progress their ideas the Minister said: "I feel that the new Rural Development Programme and the New Entrant Scheme offer a variety of support measures that could potentially be of great benefit in helping the group achieve its goals. "We must remember that young farmers are a key stakeholder and I am keen to work with them to help build a sustainable future."
