Sisters go for the chop and help to raise £1675 for Princess Trust

Altogether Macy Buick, 11, and sisters Mia, nine, Molly, six and four-year-old Madison had a total of 62 inches of hair, chopped off by hairdresser Nicola Russell, at Russell’s Hair in Haslem’s Lane, Lisburn.

Their mother Cheryl Buick, who is from Dunmurry but currently living in Lisburn, was diagnosed as suffering from a grade 2b intestine cancer, adenocarcinoma of the jejunum, in January and completed a course of chemotherapy.

She and her husband Robert, looked on in admiration as their daughters had their hair cut.

A special fundraising day was held at the salon and exercise bikes were brought up from the Canal Boxing Club Lisburn where the girl’s brother Thomas attends. Thomas got in on the action by cycling outside. During the day a total of £227 was raised.

Madison had nine inches chopped off her long mane, Macy had 17 inches cut off, Mia lost 18 inches, and Molly had 19 inches taken from her hair. An anonymous caller even stopped by to donate 12 inches of her hair.

A number of businesses also helped. They included Long John’s Laundry Lambeg, Hunts Chippy Lambeg, Balmoral Textiles Dunmurry and Faith House Care Home, Finaghy. Parents and teachers from their school Dunmurry Primary also gave generously.

Cheryl said she has been overwhelmed by the generosity of the public.

“We hoped to raise £500 but we got £885,” said Cheryl. “Once all the money was collected in from the Justigiving page we managed to raise £1675. It will go a long way to help children get their wigs. My girls are very happy they have achieved more than their goal.”

Cheryl said: “I am very proud of them. If I think back to being that age, getting your hair chopped off is a big thing.”
