Driver admits he had no excuse for excessive speed on the A1

A 55-year-old detected speeding on the A1 dual carriageway was banned from driving for 14 days last Thursday at Banbridge Magistrates Court.

Brendan Monaghan, Iveagh Drive, Banbridge, was also fined £250 and ordered to pay a £15 offender’s levy.

The court heard that on May 23 this year at 9.30pm he was detected travelling at 80mph to 85mph in a 60mph limit on the A1 at Dromore.

A fixed penalty could not be offered because he already had nine points on his licence. A solicitor representing the defendant said he accepted his speed was excessive and there was no excuse. District Judge Eamonn King said that if he imposed a short ban the defendant would have a chance of keeping his job.
